saber – saber cómo

Cada día un poco de práctica (Every day a little practice):

saber – saber cómo

Muchas veces, ‘saber’ y ‘saber cómo’ son equivalentes.

Ejemplo:
a) Alfonso sabe arreglar esta computadora.
b) Alfonso sabe cómo arreglar esta computadora.

En este caso la palabra ‘cómo’ es innecesaria y se puede suprimir.

Otras veces, la palabra ‘cómo’ puede aportar un significado diferente.

Ejemplo:
a) No sé pintar esta habitación (no tengo el conocimiento para pintar esta habitación)
b) No sé cómo pintar esta habitación (aún no he decidido cómo voy a pintar esta habitación)

------------------------------------------------------------------

Many times, 'saber ' and ‘saber cómo' are equivalent.

Example:
a) Alfonso knows how to fix this computer
b) Alfonso knows the way to fix this computer

In this case the word 'cómo (how/the way)' is unnecessary and can be suppressed.

Other times, the word 'cómo (how/the way)' may provide a different meaning.

Example:
a) I do not know how to paint this room (I do not have the knowledge to paint this room)
b) I do not know what way to paint this room (I have not decided how I'm going to paint this room)

Nótese que en los ejemplos de arriba, el verbo que viene después del verbo ‘saber’ está en infinitivo.
Cuando el verbo está conjugado y no en infinitivo, el adverbio 'cómo' no es suprimible.
Ejemplos:
¡No sé cómo toleras eso!
¡No sé cómo puede comer tanto!

Para el caso de “no se puede comer tanto” que es igual a “no puede comerse tanto” la palabra ‘se’ (sin acento) es un pronombre y no un verbo.

Note that in the above examples, the verb that comes after the verb 'to know' is in the infinitive.
When the verb is conjugated and not in the infinitive, the adverb 'cómo (how)' is not suppressible.
Examples:
I do not know how you tolerate that!
I do not know how he can eat so much!

In the case of "no se puede comer tanto (one cannot eat so much)" that equals "no puede comerse tanto (so much cannot be eaten)" the word 'se' (no accent) is a pronoun and not a verb.
