que / de que

Cada día un poco de práctica (Every day a little practice):

que / de que

First case. If you can replace ‘that’ with ‘which’, then you should use ‘que’ and not ‘de que’.
Ejemplos:
1a) Esta es la casa que tiene un piano antiguo = This is the house that has an old piano = This is the house which has an old piano
1b) Esta es la casa de que te hablé = This is the house I told you about = This is the house about which I told you
Second case. Replace the conjugated Spanish verb after ‘que’ with the infinitive. If you still need ‘de’ with the verb in the infinitive, then you should use ‘de que’ and not ‘que’.
Ejemplos:
2a) Ella tiene miedo de que el proyecto sea rechazado = She is afraid that the project is rejected = She is afraid that the project could be rejected
2b) Ella tiene miedo de ser rechazada = She is afraid of being rejected
3a) Él está seguro de que ganará = He is confident (that) he will win
3b) Él está seguro de ganar = He is confident of winning
4a) Ella quiere que el proyecto sea aceptado = She wants (that) the project is accepted = She wants (that) the project could be accepted
4b) Ella quiere ser aceptada = She wants to be accepted
5a) Él piensa que ganará = He thinks (that) he will win
5b) Él piensa ganar = He thinks of winning
Notes: pensar de / pensar en / pensar
Ejemplos:
¿Qué piensas de este empleo? = What do you think about this job? = What is your opinion about this job?
Ella siempre está pensando en él = She is always thinking of him
¡Piénsalo! = Think about it!
So, “él piensa ganar” is like “he plans to win” and “él piensa en ganar” is like “he dreams of winning” or “he thinks of the victory”. A subtle difference.
