Algunos tipos de delito
(Some types of crime)

La gente usa extensivamente la palabra 'robo' pero hay varias acepciones específicas.
(People use extensively the word 'theft' but there are several specific meanings.)

Robo/atraco/expoliación: es tomar un bien ajeno sin permiso y con violencia (en presencia del dueño).
(Robbery/plundering: Taking other's property without permission and with violence (in the presence of the owner).)

Hurto: es tomar un bien ajeno sin permiso y sin violencia (probablemente en ausencia del dueño).
(Larceny: Taking other's property without permission and without violence (probably in the absence of the owner).)
hurto en tiendas = shoplifting

Asalto: Un acto violento sobre otra persona, no necesariamente para robar.
(Assault: A violent act on another person, not necessarily to steal.)

Cuando el robo/la expoliación se comete en forma colectiva (por un grupo) contra un sector de la población (Ej. una aldea) se llama pillaje o saqueo.
(When the robbery/plundering is made jointly (by a group) against a segment of the population (e.g. a village) it is called pillaging or looting.)

El saqueo es un pillaje en que se intenta robar todo lo que se pueda.
(Looting is a pillage in which some people try to steal everything they can.)

allanamiento (entrada ilegal en propiedad ajena).
(housebreaking (illegal entry to other's property).)

allanamiento delictivo (entrada ilegal para robar).
(burglary (illegal entry to steal).)

ratería (robo de cosas menores).
(pilferage (theft of minor things).)

carterismo = Una forma de hurto de bienes en la persona sin que la víctima se dé cuenta en el momento.
(Pickpocketing = A form of theft (larceny) of property on the person without the victim noticing it at the time.)

abigeato = robo de ganado
(abaction = cattle rustling)
