Sustantivo + de + sustantivo (singular o plural)

Cuando el sustantivo después de la preposición “de” está en singular, este sustantivo crea, maneja o dirige al sustantivo que está antes de la preposición. (When the noun after the preposition "de" is singular, this noun creates, handles or directs the noun that comes before the preposition.)

Ejemplos:

golpe de timón = change of direction (literally, rudder movement)
Así, el timón produce el golpe (Thus, the rudder causes the movement)

toque de cabeza = head shot (in soccer)
Así, la cabeza produce el toque (Thus, the head causes the shot)

Cuando el sustantivo después de la preposición “de” está en plural, este sustantivo recibe la acción o el efecto del sustantivo que está antes de la preposición. (When the noun after the preposition "de" is plural, this noun receives the action or effect of the noun that comes before the preposition.)

Ejemplos:

pintura de labios = lipstick
Los labios reciben el efecto de la pintura (Lips receive the effect of the paint)

loción de manos = hand lotion
Las manos reciben el efecto de la loción (Hands receive the effect of the lotion)

Entonces, veamos la diferencia:

Secador de mano (para el cabello) = portable hair dryer
Secador de manos (aquellos que se encuentran en un baño público) = hand dryer (those found in a public restroom)
En el primer caso, la mano controla el secador (In the first instance, a hand controls the dryer)
En el segundo caso, el secador es para las manos (In the second instance, the dryer is for hands)
