Las vocales débiles o cerradas son la “i” y la “u”. Cuando una palabra (sustantivos y adjetivos) termina en estas vocales, hay dos formas de construir el plural. Si la vocal está acentuada, el plural se forma añadiendo la terminación –es. Si la vocal no está acentuada, el plural se forma añadiendo la terminación –s. (Weak or closed vowels are "i" and "u". When a word (nouns and adjectives) ends in these vowels, there are two ways to build the plural. If the vowel is stressed, the plural is formed by adding the ending -es. If the vowel is not stressed, the plural is formed by adding the ending -s.)

Ejemplos:

maní, paquistaní, sefardí, saudí, maravedí, manatí --> maníes, paquistaníes, sefardíes, saudíes, maravedíes, manatíes
yeti, zombi, mapamundi, mariachi --> yetis, zombis, mapamundis, mariachis
bambú, cebú, champú, menú, ñandú, tabú --> bambúes, cebúes, champúes, menúes, ñandúes, tabúes

Hay una tendencia a añadir sólo una –s para las palabras terminadas en “u” acentuada. De hecho, para la palabra menú, el plural menús es el considerado correcto por la Academia. (There is a trend to add only -s to words ending in stressed "u". In fact, for the word “menú”, the plural “menús” is considered the right one by the Academy.)
bambú, cebú, champú, menú, ñandú, tabú --> bambús, cebús, champús, menús, ñandús, tabús
quipu, tribu --> quipus, tribus
