Algunos casos en que no se usa el gerundio en español. (Some cases where –ing forms are not used in Spanish)

(artículo) + verbo en infinitivo (actuando como sustantivo) + resto de la oración
(article) + verb in the infinitive (acting as a noun) + rest of the sentence

Ejemplo:
(El) caminar es un buen ejercicio = Walking is a good exercise (Walking is a noun here)
(No: Caminando es un buen ejercicio)

Sustantivo + adjetivo (de/para + verbo en infinitivo) + resto de la oración
Adjective + noun + rest of the sentence (English way)

Ejemplos:
Este palo para caminar (bastón) está hecho de madera dura = This walking stick is made of hardwood (Walking is an adjective here)
(No: Este palo (para) caminando está hecho de madera dura)

Esta caña de pescar es muy larga = This fishing rod is very long (Fishing is an adjective here)
(No: Esta caña de pescando es muy larga)

Al + verbo en infinitivo + resto de la oración
For/In/When + -ing form + rest of the sentence (English way)

Ejemplo:
Al ensamblar este equipo use las herramientas adecuadas = When assembling this equipment use the right tools

O (or)

Cuando + verbo en subjuntivo + resto de la oración

Ejemplo:
Cuando ensamble este equipo use las herramientas adecuadas = When assembling this equipment use the right tools
(No: Cuando ensamblando este equipo use las herramientas adecuadas)

Pero se puede decir (But you can say):

Comiendo alimentos saludables se prolonga la vida = Eating healthy food life is prolonged
(El) comer alimentos saludables prolonga la vida = Eating healthy food prolongs life

Pero es diferente (But it is different): Comiendo alimentos saludables (usted) prolonga la vida = Al comer alimentos saludables (usted) prolonga la vida = Eating healthy food you prolong your life
