Como si yo fuera

Cada día un poco de práctica (Every day a little practice):

Como si yo fuera

There are many options in Spanish for clausal openers, maintaining "como si yo fuera" without alteration.

1) Me habla como si yo fuera ... = He talks to me as if I were ... (present)

2) Me habló como si yo fuera ... = He talked to me as if I were ... (preterit)

3) Me hablaba como si yo fuera ... = He talked (or he was talking) to me as if I were ... (imperfect)

4) Me hablaría como si yo fuera ... = He would talk to me as if I were (conditional)

All these "como si yo fuera" represent a present tense when the action happened. So, if the tense is preterit, "como si yo fuera" was present tense when it happened in the past.

If you want to talk about something in the past, you can say "como si yo hubiera sido".

1) Me habla como si yo hubiera sido ... = He talks to me as if I had been ... (present). It means that now he is talking about something that happened in the past

2) Me habló como si yo hubiera sido ... = He talked to me as if I had been ... (preterit)

etc.
